Children who Drink No Sweetened Beverages

County: Washtenaw
Measurement Period: 2015
Percent of children who drank zero sweetened beverages in the previous day.

Why is this important?

Sugar-sweetened beverages, which include soda or pop, fruit drinks, and sport drinks, are some of the highest contributors of added dietary sugar and provide little to no nutritional value. These drinks are associated with various adverse health outcomes, including increasing overweight and obesity rates, diabetes, and dental disease. While the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages has declined over the last few years, teens are still some of the highest consumers of these drinks. Limiting or eliminating sugary beverages in favor of water or milk can help children maintain a healthy weight and have a healthy diet.
